Chemical Peels
Chemical peels help restore wrinkled, lightly scarred, or blemished facial skin. Much like chemical paint strippers, chemical peels strip off the top layers of skin, and new, younger-looking skin grows back. The procedure is very effective for the upper lip but cannot be performed around the eyes. Partial peels are often done in conjunction with a face-lift.
What are the different types of peels?
Light Peels - Alphahydroxy acids (AHA) and Betahydroxy acids (BHA) are the light or "lunch hour" peels most commonly used. These peels include glycolic, lactic, and fruit acid peels (AHA) or salicylic acid (BHA). They treat the outer layers of the skin to smooth out fine wrinkles and/or rough, dry skin. To achieve the best results, we recommend combining these peels with microdermabrasions in a series.
Medium Peels - Trichloroacetic acids (TCA) are generally used to treat skin with moderate sun damage, surface wrinkles, and/or uneven tone and pigment abnormalities. Full-face TCA peels take approximately 1 hour and are performed in a medical spa or surgery center as an outpatient procedure. Sometimes two or more peel treatments, at intervals of six months are necessary to achieve the desired results.
Deep Peels - Phenol acid is the strongest chemical peel solution. It is used for the deepest possible chemical peel. Phenol peels are used to treat skin with coarse wrinkles and blotchiness. These peels should be used with caution because they can cause permanent lightening of the skin. For this reason, phenol peels are not recommended for most patients with very dark skin tones. Clients we feel could be candidates for deep peels are referred to a Dermatologist or Plastic Surgeon.
How long do the procedures take?
A typical procedure will last about 30 minutes to 1 hour varying on the level of peel you are getting.
How soon will I see the results?
Immediately after the peel, you might have an appearance similar to a sun or wind burn. On the higher strength peels, you will begin to peel in a few days as the treated skin flakes off revealing new re-generated skin. Your results should be complete within a week.
